Hot Topics – Topic Two: The great immigration debate

Topic TwoThe great immigration debate

We are all aware that immigration has become a hot topic for us in Britain over the last few years. Since the late 1990s, net immigration has risen substantially and many are concerned about the impact on public services, housing and employment opportunities. On the other side of the argument, some feel that the current high levels of immigration are necessary to keep the UK economy growing and is evolving as an ever more tolerant and diverse society.

Where pride and fear cloud the landscape of this debate, as children of God, we can access a peace and security which will allow us to create a platform for civilised discussion. There are many important questions in this debate which are being crowded out by emotive, divisive and, at times, inaccurate facts and figures. Once we have allowed the great Healer to set us free, we can bring compassion, justice, wisdom and hope to a polluted topic.
